The seasons are slowly changing. You can sense the hint of fall in the air in the criso mornings. When I wake around 6 a.m. the sun is barely present. Signs of Halloween are appearing at stores and children are heading back to school. I'm not sure if it is a coincidence but this weekend the thrifting felt very different. Friday was fabulous but Saturday was just awful. There were quite a few sales but they were just selling junk. Is this the thrift shift as we move into fall or just an unlucky weekend? I'm hoping the latter.
I'd love to get a sense from all of you about your thrifting weekend? Was it a good one? Were there many garage sales? Is your season just starting up as the weather finally cools down a little?
My third vintage umbrella find in my slow growing collection. I do use my vintage umbrellas because unlike the Seattle area where mostly tourist use them, in Sonoma County the rain can be fast and furious and an umbrella is a must.
Keiran spotted this Strawberry Shortcake sweetness in a box. She's in beautiful condition and will be headed to Etsy this fall.
I grew up with our yearly Christmas tree covered in tinsel. It looked like metal but it always had the feel of plastic. And yet I have a hard time looking at a non-tinsel tree and not think that it's missing something. Now I can toss out the fake looking stuff (which I have re-used each year for the last 5 years or so) and use this fab vintage foil tinsel. 50¢ for the two boxes.
This was my find of the weekend. I found this kit at an estate sale in Santa Rosa. Anytime I spot anything with letters, I'm drawn to it. I adore fonts and letters far more than any normal person should. When I used to get creative with the children's birthday parties I would spend a couple hours at MyFonts in search of the perfect font for their birthday party invitations.
This unique kit was meant to display titles for Slides and Movies. It's called Title Spot. I can't seem to find anything on this set. Have you seen one before?
It included 112 letters and characters including "the end."
This Charley Harper mug was a lovely surprise. It was only last week that I found this book below.
Giant Gold Book of Biology illustrated by Charley Harper.
I find his artwork and illustrations just breathtaking.
What did you find this weekend? Take a look at Southern Hospitality to check out her party.

I love that Charley Harper mug with all my heart!!! Awesome scores :-)

I didn't even go OUT this weekend to thrift! I live next to the fair grounds and it's fair time so we get a little trapped on the weekends. I went thrifting mid-week and had a great time. The sales I saw on CL were not to hot either.

The Golightly's went up into The Rockies for a day hike near the quaint town of Georgetown. Several of the Aspen are starting to turn at 10,000'. Funny thing you mention the holidays, I always start planning the home decor. I'm thinking vintage dictionary this year and decorate the tree with words I like from the tattered old dictionaries I;ve found and keep because the inside pages are so beautiful and the paper so smooth.

The mug, letters, and umbrella are beautiful. You scored some beautiful vintage finds! I actually thrifted for four hours straight yesterday and found vintage treasures and then some.
So much to list, organize, clean...zzz...

There was a chill in the air here this morning too. 4 degrees at 7am but it turned out to be a beautiful hot day, with clear blue skies of the kind we could have done with when the children were on holiday. Hey ho, it made for a nice walk home from school. Love your brolly and the letters are amazing. I would have had those in a flash.

I can always feel fall coming when the sun shines a bit hazy in the sky. I'm enjoying this last bit of summer!
Love your finds. Thanks for the info on the foil tinsel, I'll be on the lookout for it!
xoxo

Oh gosh, I love all your finds! I didn't know you were collecting vintage umbrellas! How cool is that??
You'll have to announce when you put that Strawberry Shortcake doll up. I'm aching to replace my collection! I had ALL of them, when I was little. My sweet Mom passed away when I was in college a few states away, and my Dad, in his grief, and not realizing how special those dolls were to me, gave the collection away, while clearing out "stuff" (my mom would've never let that happen had she been there)! Oh well. Such is life, but I'm always keeping my eyes open! :)

Love the umbrella!

I barely went out this weekend but the past couple of weekends have been way disappointing. You still found some nice stuff though! Love those letters too!

It was a perfect weekend - to do all sorts of things other than thrift. I did not even check the sale ads. But being out and about I did not notice any sales either. I am "saving up" (money and energy) to hit a village wide sale next weekend. Labor Day weekend is the end of our season. Of course there are flea markets and farmers markets that continue until October. It just seems everyone is so busy with too many things to fit into the last weeks of summer.
I am also attracted to words, letters, symbols. Reminders of my days at a printer and working with words.
I love the Charley Harper coincidence.

Love the letters how cool! There was a TON of signs here in Seattle, but I was working on my back yard patio and my boyfriend made us a strict no sales schedule, and all I could think while driving to pick up my mulch and other supplies was Water water and nothing to drink :-/ Although I know fall is coming inevitably soon I can't let it stir in ny head. The clouds and 60 degrees till July 5th this year made the upcoming 8 months of grey and drizzle even more horrifying :-)

The sign kit nearly made me faint. YOU KNOW I love it!!

My favorite find this weekend at a yard sale was an electric citrus juicer, for $1. We coincidentally were having a family party that day and had planned to make homemade lemonade, so the juicer was a great find and a big saver of time and elbow grease. But not nearly as cute to look at as your finds - way to go!

Those letters are really cool! Thanks for joining up this week.

Hi there,
It has been a long time since I’ve commented. In the past week I’ve caught up on your blog going back to the beginning of the year. I’m so in love with how your blog is focusing even more on the thrift finds and reselling aspects.
I have been taking it easy this summer as I’m expecting our third child. I maybe went to a few garage sales in the spring and only a couple while on vacation this summer.
I actually was so intrigued by all your awesome finds that you share that I decided to venture out to garage sales this past weekend. I live in Iowa, so we have about a couple of months left for garage sale season until next spring. Once school starts (which it has here) there usually are only a few garage sales each weekend, including this past weekend. So I wasn’t sure how I would do. I was really hoping to find jeans/pants for my son who is seven, but no such luck. However, it ended up being a really good weekend, mainly because of a super awesome estate sale! I didn’t get a post done, but hope to participate in your Thrift Share Monday next week.
I love all your finds…especially the umbrella and the letters. I have never seen any letters like those before either, how neat!

I had a FABULOUS weekend thrifting. I work for the Mennonite Central Committee in British Columbia and one of our thrift shops just relocated. they opened on friday in their new shop and my son and i scored big: clothes, funky hats, some christmas presents, a great tweed sport coat for my son, all for $50. what a deal!
Posted by: angelika | August 30, 2010 at 01:31 PM
Love the letters!! Totally would have picked those up too!
My thrifting/junking weekend was not so great too. I got some good books...but no fun "stuff".
But I realized after about the third dud sale...it was the last weekend of the month! And I have a theory about the "last weekend of the month" sales. I think the last days of the month are people just throwing any ol' thing out to pay the rent...and charging way too much for it...and people aren't thinking about donating to the thrift stores either for the same reason...so their stuff is mediocre too.
Just a theory...:)

Keiran has a good eye--I love that Strawberry Shortcake doll. The umbrella is very pretty & the letter set is so you!

Sorry to hear about your Saturday thrifting. Around here the sales were in abundance on Saturday, and I had some great finds. The strawberry shortcake doll is so sweet, the bright blue print on your umbrella will brighten any rainy day for sure.

You continue to amaze me. I have been certain for a long time I myself would find that Charley Harper book while on a thrifty adventure, so my heart skipped a little when I saw you found one. There is hope that there may be more out there. His illustrations are just amazing! You found a real treasure!

We have the biology book illustrated by Charley Harper and my children use it (we homeschool).
I enjoyed your tips on looking for garage sales and estate sales, too. Someday I'm going to have the time to put your tips into action and in the meantime I'm enjoying gathering knowledge via your posts!
