Thrift Share Monday - Nov 15 Collection of Vintage Silk Thread $3
With little thrifting expectation for the weekend, on Friday morning I was completely surprised to have found some fabulous things. My day began at an estate sale where I found two large bags of vintage thread for $3 each. The silk threads will go in my collection and the cotton threads are going to be sold at a Waldrof Winter Faire in December.
Vintage Library Cabinets (1 small & 1 large) $60 for the pair.
My jaw literally dropped when I walked into the garage and I saw these still sitting there 30 minutes into the sale. The surround is wood and the drawers are metal with wood between them. When they slide in and out it is so smooth and not at all painful to the ears like metal on metal can often be.
The previous owner had it filled to the brim with hardware and he carefully marked each drawer. I'm going to fill it with craft supplies and paper ephemera.
I think even the insides of the drawers are fabulous. I'm going to clean the drawers, create new labels for all the drawers and restore the wood to some of its former glory. I'd so love to know the history behind it.
I moved on to the next estate sale. With my goal of reorganizing all of my crafts (which are mostly stuffed in two cabinets in my office or sitting in boxes in the hallway) I purchased these vintage store boxes. I have a couple other in a similar design. I paid $10 for this collection. I would have loved to have paid less but they are quite old, pretty rare and most likely cheaper than buying new.
A little collection of vintage keys. 25¢
I love the detail of the hardware on this little cosmetics suitcase. 50¢
My last sale on Friday was a little one in the south of town. I sort of knew the area and I remember that occasionally there are some older houses so the sale could be promising. I arrived two hours after it started and found this chair.
I didn't see it at first since I went straight to the books. When I turned around to walk to another table I nearly tripped over it. And then I saw that it was $5. I couldn't pick it up quick enough and walk it over the the young woman at the checkout table. I asked if I could leave it there while I finished shopping.
Then I fretted the rest of the time, worried that someone would come along and buy it while I wasn't looking.
It is in nearly perfect condition. Almost like it came right out of the store where it was originally purchased. It's so rare that I find MCM furniture in such fabulous condition.
In hindsight I should have given her more money for it. I think I was in a bit of shock for stumbling upon it before anyone else.
I brought it home and Dave asked me "are we keeping it or selling it?"
It's one of those decisions that makes ReSelling awkward. "Keeping it" I muttered and took it inside.
"But it's perfect and we have two kids who destroy everything" he realistically told me.
"Well like the white couch, we'll just keep them off it." I argued and placed the chair in the living room where it was meant to be.
Between the library cabinet and the chair, it completely made my weekend.
And then there was Sunday when I took this photo.
It was in the 70's yesterday with a beautiful warm sun and stunning blue sky. We took my MIL to Sausalito where we enjoyed a beautiful lunch at Scoma's overlooking the bay. It was an incredible day and I was glad that California was on best form for my visiting British Mother-in-Law.
Did you thrift this weekend?

Love your finds, Selena. Great library cabinets and chair. :)

I thought the library cabinet was the prize of this post, until I saw that photo of Keiran. Beautiful.
But back to the cabinet...they nearly brought a tear to my eye (of envy.)
The type-graphics on the spool ends are fabulous, I just love vintage wooden spools, especially those with printing straight on the wood.
Love the chair, I've seen your living room- It's a perfect fit!
No thrift finds to share here, but thanks for an awesome post.

Didn't you once post 'no more furniture'? Ha, I think it's so funny the minute you deny yourself anything, you're suddenly overwhelmed by the the said 'anything'. Gotta love MCM for $5, by the way what's the diff between MCM and Danish Modern ?

Gorgeous chair! And such a great deal. My $2 MCM chair fro this summer is in much worse condition, but I still love it. I think these kinds of pieces work forever with any style. Definitely a keep :)

I have always been an admirer of old card catalogs; so much of my youth was spent in libraries. I am getting frustrated that people seem to be finding old keys and there are NONE in my area. I am sure they did lock doors back in the day. Not even in the antique barns and booth malls. Yours are unusual. Someday I will find the motherload.

Im ALWAYS saying no more furniture until I come across something so amazing or so cheap. Or maybe a little something in between. I did have the intention to add the MCM chair in my Etsy shop until I arrived home and couldnt let it go. Especially when dh was suggesting such. And when something comes in, something leaves. I have a very similar chair that is rather worn that is headed to the garage to be fixed up and sold.
MCM and Danish Modern can be interchangeable. This chair could fall into both categories easily. Its from the 60s and its modern for that time which makes it MCM but it was most likely made in Denmark (no markings) and was modern which fits into Danish Modern. Lots of modern style items though were made in America and those usually wouldnt be considered Danish Modern.

You found some great finds, especially that chair and the card cabinets. I'd love to stumble across an apothecary or library cabinet. I think it'd be so cool to use one to catalog our books, which we always seem to have scads of.

First, love Sausalito! My husband and I took the ferry over from San Fran when visiting a few years back. I think we ate at Scoma's, too. It was divine! Second, what great finds this weekend. The library card cabinets are soooo cool. I want, no need, some of those. And I really love the old boxes. And I would have kept the chair, too. It is fab!

I love the silk and the library cabinet! I've always wanted a card catalog. And the rest of your finds are lovely, too. Great chair - and keeping it is the best option!

That chair is perfect for your house--beautiful condition. Friday was my best estate sale day in a long time. After leaving you I headed over to the other sale & found a ton of vintage Christmas (keeping most of it). I've never seen so many garlands at one sale ever!

Oh Selena. My heavens, girl! You hit the motherload this weekend!!! I agree with you (and everyone here, it seems)....that chair was MEANT for YOU! Fab, FAb!
In Indiana there are no estate sales, like you have in California. We do have plenty of garage sales (in nice weather), and great auction sales. But, the closest estate sales are in Michigan (about 3 hours away from me).
You sure were at the right place at the right time this weekend. Everything you found was excellent! Thanks SO much for sharing with us.

I love those library cabinets, too. They must have special engineering, for they glide so smoothly. They don't have them in the libraries in my town any more, but when we visit the ocean, there is a little library in one of the towns and I like to stop in just to enjoy the ambiance. I always go to the card catalog, (which they still have in addition to the computers) and slide the drawers in and out. I've never seen ones small enough to fit into a house, though. Lucky you. Thanks for hosting again this week.

Oh my, LOVE that chair!! YES, keeping it, are you kidding? what a great find. I didn't thrift this weekend but i have to tell you about a great idea that one of the girls in our church youth group came up with.
We had a "sleep" over (ha.) and were told that we were to bring clothing, books, shoes, jewelery, purses, and anything else we wanted to swap. there were 17 girls there; some had brought enough stuff with them to fill a garbage bag. Each girl did her own show and tell with her stuff, which then went into a mountaneous pile in the middle of the room. after show and tell was done, we all pulled things out of the pile, tried things on and kept what we wanted. the rest we packed back into 5 garbage bags and a box and i took it to a thrift shop the next day. the girls were thrilled to get free stuff, most of it in near new condition, and the thrift shop was thrilled to get a ton of name-brand clothing and accessories. isn't that a great idea for a sleep over?
