Vintage Swiss Wooden Figurines
Recently our 1960's rental had a small hidden leak in the sink area that went into the sub flooring of our kitchen. Our landlord needed to replace it which meant that we needed to be gone a week. Since we really haven't taken a relaxing vacation in what feels like years, we thought we'd take advantage of this by heading out of town. Our landlord can rip up the floor and replace it while we head to Nevada.
When we first started planning our vacation we had hopes of traveling down the 101 to San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara. When we really thought about it though we decided that we needed a more frugal option. I suggested camping north up in Arcata or possibly heading to Reno where lodging and food can be very inexpensive. Dave loved the Nevada idea with images of the wild west going through his British head.
So here we are in Nevada staying in a lovely room for pennies compared to most hotels and eating at buffets for dinner and enjoying picnic lunches during the day.
Tomorrow we head to Virginia City to ride a stage coach, tour a mine, visit a radio museum and walk the streets visiting saloons, museums and hopefully a candy store that Apryl suggested.
Every day we visit at least one thrift store. It's hit or miss so far with nothing extraordinary to mention.
The Swiss fellows above were from a mother-load estate sale that I hit a few weeks ago. I kept meaning to write but it was Dave's birthday and my parents were visiting. I bought 4 spinning wheels, a huge set of LBG trains, bins of wool yarn, bins of craft books, an 80's bicycle, craft kits, craft supplies, wool carders, 5 sterling belt buckles and so much more. The prices were old school cheap. It was amazing. Keiran and I had the most incredible time at that sale.
New Old Stock (found 8 or so) Vintage Bakelite Switch Plates
Today we are heading to the shores of Lake Tahoe.

Hi Selena! i was so excited to see a facebook post from you so i came right over! first of all, you don't need to apologize for being on holidays - your committment to family has always been clear and it's great to see you finding frugal ways to be with your kids. We're in the middle of renovating our backyard (check my facebook photos. ugh!) and i wish we could go away and have someone do it while we were gone - there are advantages to renting!
i'm heading to Scotland in September and will have a few days in London. can you or dave recommend any charity shops that i should check out while i'm there?
love the swiss boys too!

Hi Selena! I am a spinner from NH. Would love to see a post about the wheels and carders. I have always dreamed about walking into an estate sale and spying a cache of spinning wheels. Enjoy your vacation.

Camping is one of my favorite forms of vacation. Honestly. Everyone syncs up and relaxes. However, this has been a summer of sanding and painting. Mr. Golightly and I restored windows, painted, etc. Nearly done. I did snag a vintage wooden trunk for $2 this week (it's pictured in the post). It took two hours work, some sandpaper and paint and now? It's going to be a family heirloom. Will show photos later. Girls start school TOMORROW!
