Mid Century Modern Burke Fiberglass Chair
The thrifting was very good for me this last weekend.
Nearly every single thing in our home is second hand. From the towels in our kitchen, to the desk I am writing this post on, to the jeans in my dresser and even the band-aids (unopened) in our first aid kit. I buy very few things new anymore. Sometimes when I have an item on my thrift wish list I'll buy something that will "do" until I find something more perfect. When I first moved to Santa Rosa I found a fabulous teak and tile Danish modern dining room table for $250. It came with 4 matching chairs but the seat were somewhat worn. Since I am the mother of two children, I didn't think much about the chairs especially with my then 8 year old son in mind. He comes home from school covered in sand and dirt.
Last Friday, I went to an estate sale where I found 6 Mid Century Modern Burke Fiberglass chairs. They were priced at $35 each. When I saw them in the ad for the sale in my in-box I had no idea that I would see them, fall in love with them and bring them home. I actually expected some of the other MCM dealers to swoop them up. When I walked into the garage and saw them waiting for me, I had to buy them. Although it wasn't a brilliant time to spend $210 on dining room chairs, I think if I had left them behind I would have regretted it for the rest of my life. I love these chairs. They completely make our dining room.
To balance out the purchase of the chairs, I found this amazing globe at the next estate sale. I had no idea how unique it was until I arrived home and researched it. It was made in 1961 and is a Columbus duo globe. It's actually a glass globe although at the sale I thought it was metal. You can read more about this globe at this website where it had sold for $395. This globe was my gift to pay for my chairs. I love the balance of thrifting.
Saturday morning took me to the east of town where I went to a downsizing sale. I bought this Bose CD/Radio for the kitchen for a mere $10.
This may be my first wrought iron piece that I've ever purchased. It certainly is the largest. This is a vintage wrought iron panel that I think originally was part of a decorative fence. At first I thought it was a gate but each side edge is exactly the same. It's so heavy that it took two of us to unload it from my van. This photo is only a small section of it.
I found this painting at the flea market in Santa Rosa. I walked by it the first time and of course those teal colors caught my eye. I was going to ask the price but I just assumed that it was too much. And it's not like I'm lacking in thrifted art. An hour later I wandered by the booth again and decided to ask about the cost. The seller said $15. I looked at it some more but for some reason I didn't want to spend $15. As if he read my mind, he lowered the price to $10 and I took this very large painting back to my van.
Overall it was a very positive thrifting weekend. I can't wait to see what you all found.
