When we used to vacation down in Sebastopol, California from Bainbridge Island WA, visiting the Antique Society was right at the top of my to-do-list. It probably is one of my favorite Antique Stores in the world. This last winter I was able to become a part of the Antique Society by renting a case. My goal is to eventually rent a space so that I can sell Mid Century Modern furniture.

It's currently at the Antique Society in a space called Bradford Antiques. My mentor friend kindly let me place it in his space since I can't fit anything of this size in my case.

This is another space that I think many of you would adore. This dealer's space is right out of a Country Living magazine. Lots of rusty baskets, mercury glass, Industrial and more. I love how well she's packaged and priced everything. She's definitely an inspiration for those considering having a space in an antique store.

There are a few spaces filled with incredible MCM pieces, lamps and art. I just swoon thinking about it.

Although I've shared my favorite spaces with you, this Antique Store has everything under the sun. No matter what you collect, are passionate about or perhaps a bit obsessive over, The Antique Society will fulfill your antique/vintage needs.

I got so carried away with taking photos of other spaces that I completely forgot to photograph my case. If you do pop in there, simply ask for the Apron case and they'll point in the right direction. Thrift Share Monday has Returned

We moved into our home around April 23rd and for 21 days we were without the internet. What went wrong? Really I couldn't even tell you. AT&T told us so many excuses and silly reasons why we didn't have internet, their favorite being "there was a problem with the order", but it still took them 3 weeks to get us connected to the outside world. In the end it was the amazing work of two local engineers that were our heroes. They rallied for us while the call center people at AT&T simply read from scripts. No matter what we told them, like how I probably lost $1500 in business because of this, they didn't show any empathy or care. By the end we were at wits end. So this is why Apron Thrift Girl fell off the grid. We are now back on and I've spent the last few days trying to get my business on-line.

Now back to thrifting.....

I had my first good weekend in a month. When I'm distracted (aka packing, purging, moving) I lose my thrift mojo. This last Saturday it was back and I felt like celebrating.

My day started at a Waldorf rummage sale in Petaluma. I later moved on to a neighborhood sale in a historic area of Petaluma. I found the above, somewhat Art Nouveau silver and glass box by WMF.

The second sale that I went to I found a nice collection of beautiful Sterling flatware. I can't recall the last time I found so much sterling in one place. This was a gift from the Thrift Gods and just the thing I need to plump up my business checking account. I'm hoping to get them listed this week. I can't tell you how much I needed this find.

The beauty about PBN's is that from a distance they can look fantastic. Up close this poor thing looks terrible. It is now on my growing PBN wall in the kitchen and looks perfect. I paid $4.25.

Heath Dishes

I had picked up this bowl and a matching bowl when the seller said that she had a few more dishes inside! Well I won't argue with that. She brought out 2 dinner plates and a salad plate. This is my favorite finish of all the Heath dishes. I do have a 4 small plates in a Martha Stewart blue that I adore as well but not as much as this dark blue. While I was packing these up an older gentleman told me that he used to work for Heath. Of course my eyes lit up and I began asking questions. Well, let's just say, he was a bit bitter about his former employer. He said that he was paid pennies to work while management made all the money. Interject some light profanity, add some more and then he was on his way to another sale. Gulp. I still thanked him for sharing and giving me some insight by someone that worked in the company.

I decided to try the Sebastopol Flea Market on Sunday morning since I'm now officially a Sebastopol resident. I used to attend this flea market every summer when we vacationed down here in Sonoma County. I found this sculpture right before I was set to go home. I was drawn to the colors as well as the Modernist style of design that he had. This will be going in my eBay shop.

I have a busy week ahead with continuing to get everything relisted from my closed listings, list books on Amazon and continue to set up my now much smaller office.

Thrift Share Monday - April 16

The Thrift Season seems to have officially arrived in Sonoma County. Our paper's ad section & Craigslist was full of estate sales, yard sales, garage sales and rummage sales. Did you get out this weekend?

Saturday morning Keiran and I were out the door early in search of a rummage sale. We arrived at the sale about 10 minutes later and discovered that it was much smaller than we had expected. We bought a few things and then headed back to my neighborhood where we should have stayed in to begin with.

It was two blocks from my house that I found this Plaster wall art.

So far I can't find anything about this Centaur Sagittarius (thanks Alice). I bought it at a home that was a time capsule from the 1960's. The art, furniture, decor and very large hi-fi came straight from the 60's decade. The eye of the centaur is very much in the modern style of that time. This piece isn't signed and so far I haven't been able to find out much information on it. Have you seen something like this before?

Thrift Share Monday - Sunset Magazines

The spring cleaning of my garage & home is going fairly well. The garage was nearly emptied and much of it was sold on Saturday at our yard sale to the sweet tune of $1260.

By Friday morning though I was pretty tired of dealing with "stuff" and the idea of going to estate sales didn't sound very appealing.

While Dave and Cerys ran our yard sale, Keiran and did go out to see if we could find a few sales. I do like to find enough book inventory for the week to sell on Amazon. I still wasn't very much in the mood though. We only went to one sale in the end, a hoarder's sale in the hills, north of Santa Rosa. The sale had started on Thursday and this was the last day. The Estate Sale was the kind where the hoarder saved everything from newspapers, to magazines, to egg cartons and even pickles from th 1960's. It was as if time stood still in that house. I was kicking myself for not being there on Thursday despite being tired of "stuff." Oh the irony of being at thrifter.....

There is a part of me that is glad that hoarders exhist in our world. Well I should add the thrifter in me says that. Hoarders save a slice of history that most of us would just throw away. While a Starbucks disposable cup is just garbage to us after enjoying the contents, imagine what a person today would feel emotionally finding a preserved one in 40 years time. Nostalgia stirs up feelings and emotions and has the magic ability to transport us to the past.

That's how I felt in the Hoarder's home. I was carried back in time as I picked up vintage packages, old newspapers and food packaging. Keiran who of course doesn't have these ties to the past still got a kick out of the digging aspect. He loved rummaging and searching for hidden finds.

The Sunset Magazines were especially fun to find as they feature mid century modern home designs, old advertising, vintage recipes and what the West Coast was like in the 1960's.

Pan Am

My parents & I traveled to Europe when I was 15 years old. We flew Pan Am and I think of that fabulous journey every time I see the old Pan Am logo.

If I had heaps and heaps of money, I'd buy a time capsule house from the 1960's as well as one from the 1970's. I'd spend my days filling it with items from that time including old food packaging in the kitchen. I'd then open them both as museums to let people walk back in time and experience life back then.

As thrifters, we all have our part in salvaging vintage items from yard sales, rummage sales and estate sales. Sure some of us sell them but usually they go to collectors who for the most part will be caretakers to these items of the past. Some people may put their nose down at Dealers but I think we are in a way historians, saving little bits of the past every week. We should all be proud of what we do as Thrifters & ReSellers.

Thrift Share Monday - Craft Books Score

I think most of us can agree that Thrifting is never predictable.

When I leave the house in the morning it's always with that anticipation that I will find something amazing. After the story of the $14.14 Picasso painting from last week, I figured that I had as much chance as anyone to uncover a valuable signed piece of art. I even purchased 3 Mega Lotto tickets figuring my chances were good. After not picking one single number that came up though, I realized quickly that my odds were far better with thrifting than gambling.

Friday morning brought me to a very modern house in Santa Rosa. The normal crowd wasn't there and instead there were many women that I didn't recognize. I made a guess that it was the room stuffed full of American Girl dolls that brought them there. The second the door opened they all rushed to the dolls upstairs. There were elbows pushing, hands flying trying to grab them all and some confrontational words said between the lot of them. Thankfully I wasn't interested in the dolls and one brief look into that room was all I needed to stay clear. I didn't find much at this house in the end. I did buy a clown painting with a mysterious signature. There was only one other sale that I went to and I walked away with a little pin marked faintly 18k. I still need to check it with my gold testing kit.

Saturday called for pouring rain which meant few sales. Keiran and I left early for a rummage sale in a small town called Forestville. It was held in a church and the die hard thrifters, waited under a tiny overhang together in the rain until they opened the doors. The sale was nothing like the rummage sale the week before. I struggled to find much of anything. Keiran did better than me with a new umbrella and a Jack Skellington Snuggie.

We headed back to Santa Rosa to one more estate sale. After that I was throwing in the towel and going home. It was miserable out and we were soaked and cold.

Thankfully we did stop at this sale. This was the sale that was very unexpected. They opened up two garage doors side by side in a townhouse complex and inside one garage must have been a few thousand books. The previous owner loved war, jazz and craft books. The other garage which held mostly household goods had most of the craft books as well as fabric. My eyes lit up at the sight of the craft books. Most were very modern and fabulous.

I bought three medium boxes stuffed full of books. To the point where I could just lift them and carry them to the van in the rain. I also bought another bag full of them. Soft cover books were 75¢ and hardcover were $2.00. The icing on the cake was the sets of Time Life music CD's. I bought 5 different sets and the majority of them were sealed. These are the kind that you see the informericals for. Pop Memories of the 60's is one example. A 10 disc set sold for $89.

This was my other find from the sale, a vintage Letter set for making titles for home movies.

The letters are made of something similar to chalk. They are quite heavy even though they are small. They measure about half an inch to 3/4 inch.

My last find of the weekend arrived on Sunday. Because we are saving money to buy a house, we wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary frugally. Saturday we went to a matinee film to see Hugo. (one of my favorite films ever) I bartered the babysitting and we drank water with our popcorn. Sunday the family went to to the Farmer's Market and we had our meal there. We went out for yogurt afterwards and used our stamp cards to get 2 free yogurts which we all split. We were driving to go home when I spotted a Yard Sale sign. My loving and now trained husband started following the arrows with little encouragement from me.

It was there that I bought 2 signed pieces of art by Irving Amen. So they weren't Picasso and they weren't worth nearly as much but I loved them. Dave actually brought the one above over to me which impressed me. I didn't know who it was at the time but I could tell that it was quality and I adore woodcut art. Some of his pieces sell between $50 and $180 on eBay. I told Dave when we got back in the car that this was the best anniversary gift ever. We couldn't have planned to accidentally run into a yard sale on a Sunday afternoon and find signed art. We did though and it completely made my day.

As a ReSeller and professional Thrifter I have really very few requirements. For a perfect weekend I love finding sterling, gold and Mid Century Modern items. There are other items I'd love to uncover but really it's those three that leave me satisfied through the rest of the weekend. This weekend I found all three.

Friday I found this Sterling Wine Funnel above as well as a mid century modern light fixture (similar to this one) at estate sales in Novato.

Saturday, Keiran and I were first in the door to a rummage sale where I found these iittala water goblets and a few other items below.

Denby Jet Dots Dish Set

A woman who had travelled from San Jose for the sale had asked me where I was headed once I was in the door. I told her that I'd head toward the books and Keiran would head toward the toys. Ironically as I was cutting down an isle to reach the books quicker I spotted a very large set of Denby dishes. I quickly put them in my rolling cart and continued on to the books.

My mother-in-law who lives in England is a woman after my own heart. She owns at least 8 different sets of dishes with the majority of them being Denby. She purchased most of them in the 70's and 80's. I fell in love with them quickly and even picked out a set for our wedding gift registry from a store called Debenhams.

When we lived in England we would comb the factory stores in search of "seconds" or dishes that were on sale. We even travelled to Denby and visited their factory. Denby is typically sold at Macy's and Nordstroms in the U.S. These jet dot plates above originally sold for around $43 each. At the rummage sale I bought dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and cups. These will be listed on eBay eventually after I get the 4 banker boxes of Heath listed. Sometimes I don't know why I buy dishes since I take forever to list them.

For those that focus primarily on dishes, do you have a certain favorite box to ship dinner plates in?

My last purchase which made my weekend perfect was a pair of gold tone earrings. I bought them because they were a style that I liked and that I think I could sell on eBay for at least $75. After I brought them home I took my jeweler's loupe and saw that they had a faint 14k marking on the back. I tested them with my gold testing kit and they were 14k gold. Not only that but the value in scrap gold alone was $386 yesterday. Today's value is $393. What a surprise.

The weekend was especially perfect as I got to watch both my children perform in the circus. It was a truly magical day watching them and seeing their confidence. Neither of the kids enjoy acting in plays. In fact Keiran wants non speaking roles because he find acting so uncomfortable. Both children shined in the circus. In fact I have never seen Cerys so happy and so confident as I did on Saturday night with her Circus group. It made me a proud mama. It also was a confirmation that Waldorf is the perfect education for my introvert and unique daughter and son. Here are photos from the event. Thrift Share Monday - Heath Pottery

The pouring rain and wind didn't deter me from this thrifting this weekend. I was out the door early on Friday to wait in line at an Estate Sale that had mentioned Heath in the listing. I made it 2nd in line and once in the door I hurried toward the kitchen. The pottery was there waiting for me. There were so many plates, little plates, tiny plates and mugs. The price was fantastic.

I usually carry little sold stickers to place on larger items that I want to buy but I didn't have any that day. So I grabbed the plate with the price and went in search of a Sold tag from the main table where we pay for everything. I happily stuck the sold tag onto the Heath and continued shopping.

This book on Heath Ceramics went with the set. It's full of stunning photos of Edith Heath, her early pottery and photos from the factory which was in Sausalito, CA. The book is going in my resource library.

With my new focus on buying what I really want to sell, I'm able to go into a thrift store with positive energy. I went into Goodwill last week and spotted this iittala bowl on the shelf. Now when I buy 2-3 items I feel content. Before I was really looking to fill my basket but it was with those items that are now in my "garage sale" shed. This will hopefully be listed this week.

I picked up two of these fabulous owl glasses which will be for sale at the Little Shop Booth this Saturday at the Waldorf Circus.

Saturday morning I drove out into the beautiful hills of Sebastopol to an estate sale of an artist.  She loved to dabble in pottery, copper and enamel. I found this studio copper necklace.

My friend Jacki introduced me to the world of enameling when I lived on Bainbridge Island. Since then I have thrifted a small kiln, lots of copper pieces and enamel powders. Now I just need to bring her down here to show me how to do it.

This week, I will be preparing for Saturday's Little Shop booth. I also will continue to list auctions in order to take advantage of eBay free auction listings for Store owners. It's going to be a very busy ReSelling week.

Thrift Share Monday - Narrowing the Focus

Narrowing my focus has been my priority during the last two weeks. As I've mentioned in the last few posts, I'm changing my direction of my ReSelling business. I'm buying less, I'm buying what I want to sell and I'm clearing out all of the items that I never want to see again. I'm also listing more, I'm finding less but at the same time finding more because my search has narrowed, and I'm loving my job.

Last Friday I drove over the mountain (tall hill?) to Calistoga to an estate sale. I found the owl bookends above, book inventory, a Christmas item for the Waldorf Faire next December and a German clock. While I left the sale with just a box of items, it made it easy to deal with when I returned home. The books went into my "to list" box, the bookends were photographed (and listed on Sunday), the Christmas item in the garage and the clock went on the wall after I discovered it wasn't worth too much.

Saturday I woke at 4:15 and signed up on the Estate Sale list by 4:30. That's A.M. time. Sadly it wasn't my kind of sale. The house was filled with vintage items but not the things that I'm interested in.  I bought a few items to ReSell but not what I had been expecting to buy.

The most difficult thing about this change in buying is the feeling of disappointment that I have when the car isn't full of inventory. Yet at the same time, there have been some days when I've returned home with a van load only to sigh when I've looked at it. The idea of having to deal with it all could be so overwhelming. I'll admit that some days that I left it in the car until I felt like I could face it.

Yesterday morning I woke to gray skies and a light sprinkling of rain. While Craigslist mentioned that the Santa Rosa Flea Market was happening, instead I stayed home and worked on my office. I've nearly sorted the entire room. I sent 6 large boxes of what used to be eBay inventory, to our Yard Sale shed. It felt like a huge weight off my shoulders. I didn't see it as throwing away money because I think I'll make back most of what I spent when I sell it at our next yard sale.

I'm feeling lighter, efficiently focused and happier. It seems silly that unlisted-piled-up-inventory could cause one stress, but it can. I begin to feel so inadequate that I can't get it all listed. At the end of the day it's a simply mathematical equation. I probably buy 20 items to the 1 item that I can list. That doesn't work now does it. It means I'll never catch up.

When you bring home a piece of inventory there may be an hour of work involved. It might be in chunks of time but there is the initial research. There is the moving the item around. There might be the 2nd research since you forgot what you searched the last time and then of course there is the indecision of what really to do with the item. There may even be the time spent photographing the item only to figure out that it isn't really worth selling. Every minute you spend on ONE item is money.

I think we all should really look at the math of buying inventory.

I'm trying to get a system in place where I can bring inventory home, make a decision once on what to do with it. It can either go into a "flea market" box, a "to-be-photographed for eBay" box, my yard sale Box or the Thrift Store box. The error occurs when I move the item around from office to garage to office without knowing what to do with it. That indecision can cost me money and stress.

If I can get my turn around quicker from buying to listing, I think my business will become more profitable.

One thing that has helped my efficiency is storing a small number of items together (albeit in the dining room bay window) that I want to photograph. The following day in the morning when the light is best, I'll take pictures of the inventory.

Later in the day I'll edit the photos and move the inventory to a table in my office. The next morning or possibly that day, I'll begin to list items. This is now simply becoming a habit. The immediate result is that I'm listing more and selling more.

My two immediate goals is filling my eBay store in preparation for summer when I won't work as much. The other goal is completely sorting out the garage and excess inventory by summer. When Garage Sale season really kicks into gear, I want to be ready.

Thrift Share Monday - March

Arabia Cat Pitcher

This last weekend included thrifting at estate sales, Garage Sales, Moving Sales, Thrift stores, Craiglist and a Flea Market. I think I hit nearly every kind of thrifting that there is. The weather was warm and sunny and it felt great to be home again.

Friday was my best day of the weekend with an estate sale with my favorite estate sale company. I found books, jewelry and mid century modern items. I did much better with sticking with my thrift priorities that I mentioned in the last post. I left inventory behind that I could sell but I knew that I didn't want to sell. I spent less but can handle dealing everything I bought. I'm hoping to get all the inventory listed from Friday today and tomorrow.

Saturday took me down to San Jose where I bought 39 pieces of iittala glassware from Finland.

The photo doesn't show how fab they are. They are part of the ice style of glasses that iittala is known for. It was fun to thrift in the South Bay and up the Peninsula. I found the Arabia Cat pitcher in Palo Alto at a garage sale.

Adventures of Perrine

This was my favorite find of the weekend by far. It's a book called The Adventures of Perrine and it's my mother's favorite childhood book. She gave it to me to read when I was a child and it quickly became my favorite. My mother gave her very worn copy to Cerys a year and a half ago. I've never ever come across a copy of this until yesterday. It's worth around $75 on Amazon.

Thrift Share Monday - Pottery

We are supposed to be home right now but we are still up on the road. We didn't leave until Sunday morning in order to squeeze in a visit with my brother and family (who were sick when we were supposed to see them earlier in the week). We left Seattle at 6:30 a.m. and arrived in Arcata CA at around 7:15 p.m. It was my longest driving day (with kids) in years but I was relieved to get closer to home.

The best news is that my mother is now home. Thank you again for your all thoughts and prayers! She is so pleased to be in her own bed again and with my father. After six years of cancer though her body is tired but she still has a lot of fight left in her. I have so much admiration for my mother and her stubbornness to live.

We also got to spend a bit of time on Bainbridge Island and with our very close friends there. Keiran and I are lucky enough to have best friends that are related to each other. Jacki, who I've mentioned here, and her son who Keiran has missed since we moved 2 1/2 years ago. Our short visit with them was a crazy, fun, whirlwind of thrifting throughout their area.

Saturday morning Jacki, me, Keiran and her two boys were up early for a Bainbridge Island estate sale. We arrived at 7 a.m. for a 9 o'clock start. Unlike the Sonoma County sales were people arrive at 3 a.m. we actually got to be first in the door. (sort of)

Ironically despite being there so early another anxious shopper enjoyed trying to push her way past me and was aggressively trying to shove me out of the way. Seriously? Isn't that supposed to happen in the city? Or at least in Sonoma County on a bad day and not this sleepy, serene and beautiful island in the Pacific Northwest? I held my ground and ended up right in front of a vintage Polaroid Land Camera. I was still rather annoyed but tried to not let it get me down.

My best find of the day was the Porsgrund Pottery set (borrowed a picture that is above) that is so large. I don't know how many pieces I have but they filled two large boxes. It is truly beautiful set. It's stoneware with the most amazing glaze they call Lava. It was made in Norway.

The entire back of the van is filled with inventory but I haven't had a second to take even one photograph. I can't believe how quickly the week went. We plan to arrive home later today after a four hour drive with a few thrift stores stops in between.
